How to Check and Inflate Your Tires

  1. Check when tires are cold. For an accurate measurement, check pressure before driving or at least three hours after the vehicle has been parked.
  2. Remove the valve cap. Unscrew the plastic cap from the tire's valve stem and set it aside in a safe place.
  3. Press the gauge onto the valve stem. Firmly press your tire gauge onto the valve stem. You will hear a brief hiss of air. Ensure the gauge is seated straight to get a proper seal.
  4. Read the pressure. A digital or dial gauge will display the number. A pencil-style gauge will have a stick that pops out with measurement markings.
  5. Compare to the recommended PSI. Compare the reading on your gauge to the recommended PSI listed on your vehicle's placard.
  6. Add air if needed. If the pressure is low, use an air compressor to add air in short bursts, checking the pressure frequently with your gauge to avoid overinflation.
  7. Recheck and replace the cap. Once the pressure matches the recommended level, double-check it with your gauge. Then, screw the valve cap back on tightly to keep dirt and moisture out.

Important Tips and Warnings

  • Do not rely on your vehicle's Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light alone. The TPMS is a warning system designed to alert you when pressure is significantly low, typically 25% below the recommended level. It is not a substitute for monthly manual checks with a gauge.
  • Check the spare tire. Your vehicle's spare tire, whether full-size or a temporary "donut," also has a recommended pressure, which is often higher. Ensure it is properly inflated so it is ready for use.
  • Adjust for heavy loads. If you are planning to carry extra passengers or a significant amount of cargo, consult your owner's manual. Some manufacturers recommend increasing tire pressure for heavy-load conditions.
  • Temperature affects pressure. Tire pressure drops about 1 PSI for every 10-degree Fahrenheit drop in ambient temperature. It is especially important to check pressures as seasons change from fall to winter.
